What ever happened to the much-loved company, West Coast Customs? We all remember the show, ‘Pimp my Ride’ on MTV which aired in 2004 . But the company behind the customized motors seems to have fallen into oblivion or have they?
West Coast Customs was started in 1993 by Ryan Friedlinghaus and now has franchises in Mexico, Malaysia, Dubai, Russia, and Japan. The company has also expanded into the automotive industry with a new catalog of body kits, wheels, audio kits and even a tool line. They did open a shop in Germany to target the European market and tried to replicate their US enterprise without adapting to different customer desires. A mistake made by many American companies and West Coast Customs Berlin filed for insolvency in January 2009.
According to their corporate website, “West Coast Customs has grown into one of the most powerful and recognized brands names in the custom automotive industry. We now have franchises stretching across the world and various ventures across various media platforms. We have worked with some of the largest brands in the world and Fortune 500 companies. We are now a household name in multiple countries and plan to continue growing and dominating the custom car world and expand our global reach with amazing rides and concepts.” West Coast Customs state that they get over 100,000 unique visitors per month to their website and featured in a wide range of media. They also attend events such as the X Games and would have customized cars for many of the top X Games stars. Sylvester Stallones truck in the movie, ‘The Expendables’ was designed and built by West Coast Customs and they have also designed and built Paris Hiltons famous pink Bentley below.
Are they back on television? Well they now have their own reality show on TLC (DMAX in Ireland & UK) and Discovery Channel called Street Customs. Their newest series Inside West Coast Customs premiered January 2011 on Discovery HD Theater, now called Velocity. Season 2 began on February 12, 2012, and included celebrity clients such as will.i.am, Mark Wahlberg and returning customer Justin Bieber.
